\u00abHowever, decoherence is also taken as an argument against nontrivial quantum effects in biology (Tegmark, 2000). As my presentation suggests, such conclusion is unwarranted. By allowing the environment to enter into our description of the system under study, we have, in fact, opened the door for biology to take the central stage. This is because the environment that we might need to consider in order to look for the preferred states of a particular system could be very varied and complex \u2014 but the \u2018physics proper\u2019 limits itself to very simple environments, represented by a thermal bath of some kind. For biologists, on the other hand, it is natural to study much richer and less trivial environments. In particular, the concept of \u2018adaptation\u2019 of a system to its environment starts to play an important role. First, the most important part of understanding a biological object is in considering its relationship with its environment \u2014 the way how different life forms correspond (adapt) to their surroundings. Second, the biological organization is often manifested in the adaptation of different parts of the system to each other. Accordingly, biology can provide a more appropriate experimental and conceptual framework for general exploration of the phenomenon of decoherence \u2014 especially when one applies the decoherence scheme to the cases of environment other than a thermal bath. R: It would be interesting to know the author\u2019s opinions on this issue, what interpretation (of quantum theory) he adheres to, and how the classical description smoothly arises from the quantum one.<\/p>\n

A: My statement about quantum description as fundamental should be taken in the context of decoherence theory (http:\/\/www.decoherence.de\/<\/a>). Nowadays, this is the biggest challenge for quantum biology, and any quantum biologist taking himself seriously, has to deal with it. What I suggest is a kind of aikido trick (\u00abAikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on\u00bb) to deal with decoherence argument against quantum effects in biology. Namely, I start by accepting the main premise of decoherence argument, stated by Zeh and Zurek \u2014 and this is exactly to take the quantum description as fundamental, and classical as its derivative. This is the first part of the trick \u2014 \u00abblending with the motion of the attacker\u00bb. However, here comes the next part of my trick (\u2018redirecting\u2019) \u2014 I suggest to look more carefully at the role of environment in the decoherence process and to notice that in biology, unlike in physics, environment plays much more interesting and variable role. Let me quote myself:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u2026 Some properties of a particular object that appear to be classical and subject to superselection rules in one environment \u2014 might exhibit superposition behavior in another. Conversely, a state einselected in one environment \u2014 could be destroyed by decoherence in another. Moreover, all these situations could be equally realistic and happening in the life-time of the same biological system. (section 5, page 7) \u00bb<\/p>\n

\u00abHowever, decoherence is also taken as an argument against nontrivial quantum effects in biology (Tegmark, 2000). As my presentation suggests, such conclusion is unwarranted. By allowing the environment to enter into our description of the system under study, we have, in fact, opened the door for biology to take the central stage. This is because the environment that we might need to consider in order to look for the preferred states of a particular system could be very varied and complex \u2014 but the \u2018physics proper\u2019 limits itself to very simple environments, represented by a thermal bath of some kind. For biologists, on the other hand, it is natural to study much richer and less trivial environments. In particular, the concept of \u2018adaptation\u2019 of a system to its environment starts to play an important role. First, the most important part of understanding a biological object is in considering its relationship with its environment \u2014 the way how different life forms correspond (adapt) to their surroundings. Second, the biological organization is often manifested in the adaptation of different parts of the system to each other. Accordingly, biology can provide a more appropriate experimental and conceptual framework for general exploration of the phenomenon of decoherence \u2014 especially when one applies the decoherence scheme to the cases of environment other than a thermal bath. Along the way, it can help to understand some biological problems (section 45, page 75). \u00bb<\/p>\n

I hope it also answers to the second part of your question \u2018how the classical description smoothly arises from the quantum. \u00bb I think that decoherence theory provides a large part of the answer, although not complete. Personally, I hope that biology can help here.<\/p>\n

R: \u00abQuote from \u2018A Different Universe\u2019 by Laughlin\u00bb. It would be interesting to learn what the author thinks about it.<\/p>\n

A: I appreciate very much this book and found many interesting ideas that resonate with my thinking. One of the very inspiring ideas is the notion (page 31) that so called fundamental laws of physics are, in fact, \u2018a consequence of aggregation of quantum matter into macroscopic fluids and solids \u2014 a collective organizational phenomenon\u2019.<\/p>\n

So, Laughlin also admits that we need to start with quantum description and then somehow to describe how the collective behavior emerges from it. Applying this idea to biology, the key issue here is, obviously, what kind of approximation to take. Incidentally, because we are looking for an approximation, the large number of components and complexity should not intimidate us here, (although I find your reference to Burevestnik strangely flattering :-))<\/p>\n

I will give a very simple example of how we can deal with a ostensibly large and complex system of many degrees of freedom and, despite its intimidating size, extract some simple and useful elements to describe its behavior. It is precession of gyroscope, which can be manifested by any solid body, regardless of its composition and exact nature of interaction between the elements composing it. All what we need to know about this system in order to explain precession is that there are certain constraints imposed on the motions of its elements \u2014 namely that the distances between different elements have to remain constant, no matter what exactly is the nature of interactions between the elements. Implementing these constraints dramatically narrows down the space of potential states of this system, which a priori seems to be very complicated. Accordingly, the motion of the system becomes constrained to this subspace, and this, effectively, explains precession.<\/p>\n

Regarding intracellular dynamics, I propose something similar. The nature of constraints is different and more difficult to formalize. However, my hunch is that these constraints should have something to do with enzymatic activity. Indeed, consider first a chemical system where there is no catalytic activity interconverting between substance A and substance B. In this case, we can vary the concentrations of these two substances independently from each other, in other words, we will need two independent degrees of freedom to describe an arbitrary state of our system. Now consider the case when there is an enzyme that can convert A to B and vice versa. Then, in the case of equilibrium, we need to know only the concentration of one of these substances, because we can calculate the second one from the value of equilibrium constant. The presence of enzymatic activity effectively narrowed down the space of possible states of our chemical system.<\/p>\n

Of course this is a huge oversimplification, because I am generally against considering a cell as a conventional chemical system, governed by the laws of mass action (see section 24, page 38). But it serves to illustrate the main point of what information could and should be taken into account in the search of the approximation to describe intracellular dynamics.<\/p>\n

I have another argument for why it is enzymatic activity that should be taken as a principal element of such approximation. It is the only way to make an approximation testable in experiment:<\/p>\n

\u00abFinally, any sensible theory should be experimentally testable. Life is the biologists\u2019 turf. Thus, any theory of intracellular dynamics and organization, no matter how deeply rooted in physical principles, will have to be testable by the biologists. But, ultimately, most of what experimental biologists know how to do is develop increasingly sophisticated ways to measure and manipulate the amounts, locations, conformations and activities of enzymes and other proteins (either directly or indirectly, via manipulation of the structure of genes). (section 37, page 63<\/p>\n

R: Molecular ion of hydrogen \u2014 is a well-known model in chemistry, for which at present one can easily carry out quantum calculations on a good level. Probably for this reason, I failed to understand the qualitative explanations of the author in this example. I would advise the author to compare his consideration of the hydrogen ion to that in chemistry. This, from my point of view would help to better understand what he means by a \u00abcatalytic force\u00bb.<\/p>\n

I admit that the clear explanation of how catalytic force emerges is a matter of great concern for me, and I am not sure that I have found the best route yet. I will try to convey the idea here in different words.<\/p>\n

Describing the forces that hold the two protons together in the molecular hydrogen ion, we can draw the principal element responsible for this effect from Feynman. It is the uncertainty principle. Oversimplifying a bit, the less certain the position of electron is, the lower its energy is allowed to be. In other words, it is delocalization of electron that keeps the two protons together.<\/p>\n

Now, I suggest to use similar logics at the different level \u2014 instead of molecular structure, consider the cell as a large aggregate of electrons and nuclei, and instead of electron delocalization, consider \u2018delocalization of matter \/ stuff of the cell\u2019 over possible configuration states, allowed by enzymatic activities in the cell. The analogy is formal, and I suggest some additional arguments to take it seriously. However, I would like to draw attention to the most important for me, as a biologist, implication of this idea, which makes it all worthwhile. It is the new way to understand how a meaningful biological organization can be sustained, which is alternative to the prevalent Darwinian explanation via natural selection. I do not have room to explain, but take my word that it is extremely interesting. That is why, in my opinion, despite many technical challenges, such idea is worth exploring.<\/p>\n

R: Citation shows that, in general, Vasily on the right track. The only thing, it is best not to mess with the foundations of physics. I am not sure if this will help in solving biological problems.<\/p>\n

A: I agree that, if only from a strategical point of view, it is better to avoid dealing with the physics foundations at the beginning. In fact, this is what I am trying to do. For example, I try to focus on problems that are easier to approach from the point of view of reversible and deterministic physics, exactly because fundamental physics is reversible and deterministic, whereas understanding physical irreversibility and measurement is still matter of substantial debates. (Section 20, page 32). In this way, we can avoid dealing with the physics foundations.<\/p>\n

However, I am afraid that, eventually, when we will have to deal with the manifestations of Life in all its glory, \u2018messing\u2019 with physics foundations will be unavoidable.<\/p>\n

In fact, \u2018interference\u2019 is a basis-dependent notion, as it is reflected in the values of the \u2018off-diagonal terms\u2019, and what these values will be depends on the choice of the basis for description of our system by density matrix. Thus, it is simply meaningless to say that \u2018typical for QM interference dies\u2026\u2019 without specification of the basis. It is true that interference dies if we choose the so called \u2018preferred states basis\u2019, and this is what is responsible for the \u2018quantum to classical transition\u2019 in the decoherence theory. However, my whole point is that the spectrum of preferred states is determined by environment, and in biology environment is not as trivial as in physics (see my comment above).<\/p>\n
